Growing up in Catholic Children’s Aid gave me a foundation for helping others. I ran away from home at the age of ten to escape an abusive household. Catholic Children’s Aid found me on the streets of Toronto and took me into Care. I became a Crown Ward but I had a hard time adjusting to my new life. I moved around from foster home to group home dealing with anger and moved out on my own at the age of sixteen.
At that time I was looking for a mentor, someone to show me what to do and how to do it. I needed to learn how to move forward in life, how to be successful, how to be happy and how to take care of myself. I was disappointed and alone but through trial and error, self education and a desire to succeed, I made the best opportunities out of my circumstances; and because of my hardship and overcoming my personal hurdles, I’m able to pass along the strategies and tools that I used to help others.
I have been counselling since January 1986, taking contracts from Catholic Children’s Aid and various other government agencies. My focus has always been on teaching kids appropriate social skills, community safety skills, and understanding and developing appropriate limits.
